AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 vs Ryzen 9 8945HS: Is the Mini PC Upgrade Worth It?

The AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 brings more CPU cores, Radeon 890M graphics and a much faster NPU to the latest generation of AI Mini PCs. But if you already own a Ryzen 9 8945HS Mini PC, those specification improvements do not automatically make an upgrade worthwhile.

For most office, development, media and light-gaming users, the Ryzen 9 8945HS remains a capable processor. An HX 470 Mini PC becomes more compelling if you need faster integrated graphics, heavily threaded CPU performance, Copilot+ features or supported on-device AI applications.

Maximum processor specifications do not guarantee identical Mini PC performance. Cooling capacity, sustained power limits, BIOS settings and memory configuration can significantly affect the final result.

What is Ryzen AI 400?

Ryzen AI 400 is AMD’s 2026 processor family for AI-capable PCs. The Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 combines four Zen 5 cores, eight efficiency-focused Zen 5c cores, Radeon 890M integrated graphics and an XDNA 2 NPU.

AMD lists the HX 470 with 12 CPU cores, 24 threads, a boost clock of up to 5.2 GHz and up to 55 TOPS of NPU performance. The chip also supports a configurable power range of 15–54W, although an individual Mini PC manufacturer determines the actual operating limits and cooling design.

The HX 470 is therefore not simply an NPU update. Compared with the 8945HS, it also increases CPU core count by 50% and graphics compute-unit count by roughly one-third.

Those percentages describe hardware resources—not guaranteed application performance.

CPU performance: who benefits from 12 cores?

The Ryzen 9 8945HS has eight Zen 4 cores and 16 threads. That remains sufficient for most everyday Mini PC workloads, including:

  • Microsoft Office and web applications;
  • programming and moderate compilation;
  • photo editing;
  • 4K media playback;
  • casual gaming;
  • light virtual-machine use;
  • home office and multi-monitor setups.

The HX 470’s 12-core, 24-thread design should matter more in workloads that can keep many CPU threads busy. Examples include:

  • large software compilation jobs;
  • CPU-based rendering;
  • video encoding;
  • multiple simultaneous virtual machines;
  • batch photo processing;
  • data compression;
  • heavy multitasking.

However, an HX 470 Mini PC must sustain adequate power and temperature levels to use those extra cores effectively. A compact system with conservative power limits may perform differently from a larger Mini PC using the same processor.

CPU upgrade verdict

For browsing, office work and general productivity, upgrading from an 8945HS solely for CPU performance is unlikely to transform the experience.

For consistently multithreaded professional work, the HX 470 is a more meaningful upgrade—but buyers should compare complete-system cooling and sustained performance, not processor names alone.

Radeon 890M vs Radeon 780M: is this the main upgrade?

For many Mini PC buyers, Radeon 890M graphics may be a more visible improvement than the CPU.

The Radeon 890M has 16 compute units and a maximum frequency of 3.1 GHz. The Radeon 780M in the 8945HS has 12 compute units and runs at up to 2.8 GHz. The older Radeon 680M also has 12 compute units, but its official maximum frequency is lower at 2.2 GHz.

That additional graphics hardware can help with:

  • esports games at 1080p;
  • newer games using low or medium settings;
  • GPU-assisted photo and video applications;
  • high-resolution display workloads;
  • some GPU-based local AI tools.

But integrated graphics performance depends heavily on memory bandwidth. A Mini PC using fast LPDDR5X memory may outperform a socketed DDR5 system with slower or single-channel memory—even when both use the same processor.

This is why “Radeon 890M” alone does not tell you the complete gaming result.

Graphics upgrade verdict

Upgrade from Radeon 780M to Radeon 890M if integrated-graphics performance is one of your main limitations and you do not plan to use a discrete GPU.

If you already use an external GPU, the difference between the two integrated GPUs becomes much less important. In that situation, OCuLink or USB4 implementation may matter more than the iGPU model.

NPU performance: 55 TOPS vs 16 TOPS

The largest specification difference is the NPU.

AMD rates the Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 NPU at up to 55 TOPS, compared with up to 16 TOPS for the Ryzen 9 8945HS. Microsoft currently identifies a 40+ TOPS NPU as one of the hardware requirements for Copilot+ PCs.

A faster NPU may help with supported tasks such as:

  • background effects and video-call processing;
  • image generation or editing features optimized for the NPU;

However, NPU TOPS should not be treated as a universal AI benchmark. Different applications use different models, data types and software frameworks. Many local large language model tools still rely primarily on the CPU, integrated GPU, discrete GPU or system memory rather than the NPU.

NPU upgrade verdict

Upgrade for the NPU only when at least one of these conditions applies:

  1. You specifically need Copilot+ functionality.
  2. Your software vendor confirms support for AMD’s XDNA 2 NPU.
  3. Running supported AI workloads locally is an important part of your workflow.
  4. Lower-power AI inference provides a measurable benefit to your use case.

If your AI software cannot use the NPU, 55 TOPS may add little immediate value.

Can the HX 470 run local LLMs better?

Potentially—but the NPU is not the only deciding factor.

Local LLM performance depends on:

  • model size and quantization;
  • available system memory;
  • memory bandwidth;

  • how much memory can be allocated to the integrated GPU.

An HX 470 Mini PC with 32GB of memory may still be less useful for large local models than a well-configured system with 64GB or 96GB.
